I was struggling to believe that things could ever go well again.
Made at the darkest period of my life so far (freshly homeless, with no income, terrified about the future, and falling down a dark hole of uncertainty), this piece was my spiritual life raft.
Over a period of a couple of months, in between crisis meetings with support people, and moving between friend’s houses where I was sleeping on their couch, I sat outside gazing at trees.
I made myself spend time focusing on the exquisite perfection of the light and breeze playing through the leaves.
I held the paintbrush in my hand and practised dancing with colours in the same way the light moved, as a source of comfort and distraction.
I imagined myself moving through my future life with as much joy and lightness.
